Project Dark Looks Suspiciously Like Demon’s Souls 2

Jonesing for more Demon’s Souls? Good news might be inbound, judging by this trailer. It’s Project Dark, the new game from the same team.

The game was revealed at Sony’s TGS press conference. The announcement was accompanied by the short teaser trailer above. It certainly has a very similar kind of look and feel to Demon’s Souls. And the short sequence that looks like gameplay (about 20 seconds in) uses a very similar perspective to its (possible) predecessor.

Project Dark is only a working title at the moment. It’s entirely possible that this might end up just being Demon’s Souls 2. On the other hand, From Software have a history of taking the best bits from previous games and then making something entirely new. Some people believe that certain elements of the King’s Field series begat Demon’s Souls. Perhaps this is something new.

Saying that, there do seem to be an awful lot of, well, demons. Who probably have souls.

Demon’s Souls ended up being something of a surprise hit in the West. Some believed that its immense difficulty would put many players off. But it turned out that there was a loyal fanbase who were more than willing to put up with the game’s many trials. It helped, of course, that the game included a wide variety of unique mechanics, particularly with regard to online play. It was this creativity that made people curious enough to try the game. How often do gamers get the chance to have a boss fight where the boss in question is actually controlled by another player? All of these unique features helped set the game apart from other action RPGs and make it an experience unlike pretty much anything else.

Those fans who were hardcore enough to beat the original game will surely be very excited about the possibility of a sequel. Or at the very least, a spiritual successor from the same team.

Project Dark, or whatever it eventually ends up being called, is due out at sometime next year. Hopefully some more information will trickle out soon. The above image promises more information in early 2011. Which will be good. Because there’s practically no information now, save the fact that it’s an action RPG and will be published by Namco Bandai.

Oh, and by the way. 360 owners? Look at the image above. Noticed the little logo at the bottom right? Next to the PlayStation one? Mmhmm. Be excited.
