It looks like the question of PS3 backwards compatibility has yet to be answered entirely. Those of you who just bought a “slim” PS3 probably don’t want to have to lug out your PS2 every time you’re feeling nostalgic. Well, it looks like Sony may have a solution for you, and one that earns them a fair amount of cash on the side.
An internal document leaked by Sega provides compelling information regarding the possibility of Sony brining last gen games to the PS3 in downloadable form. The document, discovered by Objectif-Sega has been removed at Sega’s request, but a number of quotes have been recorded regarding the document’s details. It looks like “SCEA wants to sell all PS2 titles on PSN,” and with such a massive library, this may just be the shot in the arm the PS3 needs. Additionally, there was talk of brining Dreamcast games to the PS3 as well: “If we provide a list of DC titles SCEA will let us know which ones they’re interested in having exclusively.”
The document itself appears to be comprised of notes that were taken during a meeting in August between SCEA publisher relations and Sega of America. If the document is in fact valid – and all signs point to “yes” – then it looks like another surprise from Sony has been spoiled, but hey, I’m not complaining.
