PSP Does Not Sell Out

Sony Computer Entertainment America issued a press release stating that they sold over 500,000 units in the first two days generating around $150 million dollars in sales. But if you do the math, $150 million divided by $250 for each PSP you get 600,000 systems in the first week. While the president and chief executive officer, Kaz Hirai, remained optimistic concluding “In only two weeks, PSP is having an immediate impact across the entire industry as consumers are clearly voting it the product of the year in 2005.”.

In the press release didn’t it directly say the initial shipment was a total sell out. The release does touch on it by stating “PSP sales were achieved during a traditionally slower non-holiday season launch, and during a period when many retailers were closed for Easter.”

This will come as a disappointment to Korean and European gamers who saw their launches pushed back due to the shortages of units elsewhere.
