Well, this is sort of interesting. It’s also really depressing. I’ll get to why I’m depressed at the end after the break. Sony Computer Entertainment of Europe President, David Reeves, says that the PSP will be the one and only iteration from Sony.
He says that he would have heard something by now from the folks in Tokyo, but he hasn’t. Here’s what Joystiq had him saying.
“‘…there are currently no plans for a PSP2…I go to Tokyo quite a lot and no one has referred to it – I think they have their hands full at the moment…
…[The PSP’s] weakness…is its software… [For developers] when it comes to placing their bets, have to choose PS3 and 360, then Wii, then DS, maybe even PS2 before PSP.'” — David Reeves via Joystiq
I’ve been half expecting a new handheld hardware announcement from the PSWorld at any moment in the near future. I’ve been hoping for it, honestly. I had the PSP for a long time and loved it, but eventually the non-existent software catalogue really took its toll. The same thing is happening for the DS right now, in my opinion.
But why does this really suck? Competition encourages innovation. With nothing to push Nintendo ahead in the gaming market (sorry, Steve Jobs, the iPhone is not the greatest handheld gaming tool), the company will find even more comfort in slowing development. As if they haven’t been milking the DS’s success long enough, I expect the nonexistence of competition to delay their hardware advancement even further.
