For those few people who haven’t succumbed to BioWare’s magic and played Dragon Age: Origins yet, waiting may have been the right thing to do. GameStop listings appeared for an “Ultimate Edition” of the excellent RPG yesterday. They were quickly removed after news got out, presumably after a few polite words from EA and BioWare.
Eagle-eyed observers did manage to spot that the new edition is supposedly due for release on October 12 for $59.99. There were no details listed as to what the pack contained. Neither EA nor BioWare have commented on the matter, either. But from the “Ultimate” moniker, many are hoping that the package will contain the original game, the Awakenings expansion and all of the DLC.
It’s probable that now people are talking about it, an official announcement is on the way. It would certainly be an excellent way for those new to the game to get the “complete experience”. And for those who played the original but didn’t pick up any of the DLC, it’ll be a convenient, if expensive, way to get it all together, too.
In the meantime, Microsoft are having a blowout sale on Xbox Dragon Age DLC this week. There are substantial savings on several of the additional content packages available for the game. The Shale package included with new copies of the game isn’t amongst them, oddly enough. Project Ten Dollar at work.
The highlight of the deal must be the Awakenings expansion. Normally 2400 Microsoft Points (about $30), Gold members can now snag it for 1600 points (about $20). This package adds a significant amount of new story and gameplay to the game, and is well worth the price of admission. Particularly at this new low price.
Also in the deal is the Return to Ostagar DLC, down to $3 from $5. Alongside this is the Warden’s Keep package, which includes a place for packrat heroes to store some of their hard-earned loot. This is down to $5 from $7. Some gamers still say the “bank” system should have been in the original game. But Warden’s Keep contains an entertaining side-story, too.
The most recent DLC, Leliana’s Song and Golems of Amgarrak, aren’t in the deal, presumably because they’re still shiny and new.
Those who like to pimp out their Xbox Avatar in threads befitting their favorite games are in luck, too. The Blood Dragon Red Avatar Tee for both male and female avatars is down from $1 to $0.50. Bargain.
So, thinking of another playthrough of Dragon Age: Origins? Now would be a good time to do it—at least for those who already own the game on the Xbox. Those who don’t may be better served by waiting until October to see what the Ultimate Edition brings. There’s no official word on whether PSN or the BioWare store will be running similar promotions to Microsoft’s deal.
Regardless, Dragon Age is still an excellent game and it’s good to see it getting support. Especially with the sequel headed this way, too.
