Now, kids, before you let your feathers get too ruffled, remember that this is definitely a rumor. That said, this particular rumor will no doubt be met with equal measures of rejoicing and indignation if it proves true.
CVG reports (by way of the ever-trustworthy “industry chatter”) that 343 Industries – the studio that’s taking up the Halo mantle now that Bungie’s moved on to greener ring-worlds – is working on nothing less than a full-blown remake of 2001’s Halo: Combat Evolved.
Sources naturally speculate that the remake could be built on the Halo: Reach engine and might even see a November 2011 release, a full decade after the original’s release. Given Microsoft’s admitted desire to start releasing a new Halo game every year, this would make a whole lot of sense, especially considering further rumors that a proper Halo 4 will follow in 2012.
These rumors raise a ton of questions: with today’s technology, is a ten-year-old game worth remaking? Technological breakthroughs in graphical technology have slowed somewhat in recent years; 2000’s games hold up better to 2010’s than 1995’s games did next to 2005’s Xbox and PS2 titles.
Besides, the original Combat Evolved disc isn’t exactly hard to come by. I’ve got two lying around somewhere. The game’s even available digitally on the Xbox Live Marketplace for a paltry 1,200 Space Bucks.
And what of Halo 4? It seems like the obvious choice for 343, but was the conclusion of Halo 3 not satisfactory? Its mysterious reference to Marathon (Bungie’s early-90s Mac shooter trilogy) left plenty of fans tickled, and many would likely prefer for that ending remain ambiguous.
