Rumor: Sony Assembling PSP Phone Team

Sony may be feeling the pressure from Apple to create their own smart phone gaming console. According to unconfirmed reports from the Nikkei business daily, Sony is putting together a team to explore the possibilities of combining the PSP Go! with a type of Ericsson mobile phone. The team’s goal would be create a device to directly compete with smart phones that having mobile gaming capability.

Sony has not confirmed or denied the reports of assembling this team, but with the success of the Apple’s iPhone, Sony can’t brush away the competition’s success easily. It would make sense for Sony to explore this possibility, as other Japanese developers such as Square Enix, Sega and Capcom have all created apps for the iPhone and iTouch.

The PSP brand has had trouble in the past solidifying it’s purpose, as Sony has also had a number of non-gaming applications for download (clocks, calculators, etc). If Sony feels that Apple is cutting into its mobile gaming market, is it only a matter of time before Nintendo explores a phone option?
