Sonic the Slow-hog

So, I rented a copy of Sonic and the Secret Rings because I am not the one reviewing it. Our Wii editor, Matthew Green, is in charge of that affair, and all of a sudden, I feel very sorry for him. Matt, if you’re reading this, I’m sorry. I didn’t know.

Why the tone? Sonic and the Secret Rings is flat-out disappointing. I won’t get too into it, as we’ll go into more detail in our review, but it’s so slow. I’m not talking about framerate, either. The gameplay is slow. Sonic moves at the speed of molasses – if that. This feels like the slowest Sonic I’ve ever played, but perhaps my memory of other Sonics is just inaccurate.

The reason I am disappointed is because at E3 last year, I played Sonic and the Secret Rings and was pretty surprised. It was actually pretty good. But the final game feels entirely different. It feels very buggy and rushed, lacking any kind of polish. The menus are bland, the music horrible and everything about the game feels second-rate.

I think that if I had any single complaint about the game, so far, it’s the terrible sense of speed. It’s just so slow. I play Sonic games to go fast. This isn’t fast. It’s slow. What gives?

At times, Secret Rings is actually quite enjoyable, but so far, I am not liking it all that much.

Meh.
