Joining the ranks of Midway Games, Microsoft Game Studios, and Ubisoft, Sony Online Entertainment has officially acquired the license to use Unreal Engine 3 developed by game engine powerhouse Epic Games.
The announcement came recently that SOE has reached a licensing agreement with Epic Games to use the Unreal Engine 3 in not only future PlayStation 3 games, but PC games as well. The agreement also includes use of the engine for an upcoming DC Comics massively multiplayer online game, which is being developed at SOE-Austin. Sony Online Entertainment joins SOE’s parent company, Sony Computer Entertainment, which licensed the Unreal Engine 3 exclusively for PlayStation 3 game development in July 2005.
“Our development teams are very excited about harnessing the power of Unreal Engine 3,” said SOE president John Smedley. “The combination of a top-notch graphics engine and a robust set of design tools will enable our teams to deliver incredible and innovative game content for next-generation consoles and the PC.”
Sony Online Entertainment is the publisher behind the well-known
EverQuest, as well as Star Wars Galaxies and the upcoming action RPG Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom exclusively for the PlayStation 3.
Other upcoming PlayStation 3 titles to utilize the Unreal Engine 3 include Epic’s Unreal Tournament 2007, Koei’s Fatal Inertia, and Gearbox Software’s Brother in Arms: Hell’s Highway.
