It’s no secret Microsoft, as a company, bleeds money, and the Xbox 360 has been particularly successful lately. They’ve got especially expensive marketing campaigns in the works right now for both Halo: Reach and Kinect, their upcoming controller-less peripheral, and many may wonder how Sony plans to compete – their motion tech Move is coming out soon, as well, after all.
Wonder no more! Sony’s Senior Vice President of Marketing in the US, Peter Dille, recently told the Seattle Times that the company will never spend as much on marketing as Microsoft does.
“I don’t think we’ll ever outspend Microsoft,” were his exact words when asked whether the company ever plans to match Microsoft’s promotion expenses.
“Our perspective has become much more bullish as we get closer to launch,” he said. “We’ve had a chance to get people playing our system … The feedback we’ve gotten has been unanimous and tremendous. It’s, ‘I see what you mean about this precision thing.’ Our pre-orders continually are ramping up with consumers, retailers want to get more product.”
It’s no wonder Sony doesn’t have to spend as much on advertising, given how much more intelligent their ads are. While trailers for Kinect generally feature the stupidly grinning faces of various family-type actors, Move’s trailers feature the enigmatic Kevin Butler making fun of the Kinect trailers, as seen above.
Will it be enough for Move to pull ahead in the no-holds-barred battle that’s about go down this holiday season? Considering Butler’s popularity with the hardcore crowd, Move has likely already begun working its way into the hearts of gamers, but the motion control war is still very much up in the air.
This isn’t Sony’s only recent candid statement; PlayStation exec Kaz Hirai also told MCV that the PSPgo probably bombed in part because of its high price. Go here for the full scoop.
