Super Mario’s Wacky Worlds Footage Revealed

By now, very nearly everyone is familiar with the tale of how Nintendo and Sony were going to team up to create a CD-ROM system which would challenge the SEGA CD for multimedia dominance in the living rooms and bedrooms of families the world over. Nintendo, not comfortable with the terms of the deal that would allow Sony a bit too much leverage over the games produced on CD-ROM, decided to ax the deal in a most unceremonious way: by announcing a different deal with one of Sony’s biggest rivals, Phillips.

This didn’t really pan out so well for Nintendo, either, and eventually resulted in the CD-i, home to what are widely considered the worst Zelda and Mario games ever made (if you want to be kind about it). But one game which was not made might actually have been decent.

Super Mario’s Wacky Worlds was intended to be a true sequel to Super Mario World, but never actually saw the light of day. Despite this, Unseen64 has managed to dig up some footage to give us an idea of what might have been:

Hmm, Sonic CD, this ain’t. While the backgrounds look kind of nice for the time, I can’t say that I see very much that’s “wacky” about the worlds in question, especially given that it’s based on real world locations.

I don’t think we missed too much here; if anything, we may even have dodged another Wand of Gamelon-sized bullet.
