The Deadly Silence Is Broken

Resident Evil: Deadly Silence for the Nintendo DS is already set for release January 19th in Japan, two whole months prior to the tenth annivesary of PSX’s Resident Evil. Japanese publication Famitsu Weekly recently revealed several more juicy details on the dual-screen title, including some light on its cinematics, wireless modes, and control schemes.

The classic adventure of the original Resident Evil is fully intact in Deadly Silence requiring no stylus use whatsoever, and the same classic puzzles that sparked interest in the survival horror series. Famitsu also confirmed that each of the cinematic scenes in the game will be fully voiced, like the original, and can finally be skipped this time around.

Also mentioned was the control scheme for the title, which has its tweaks exclusive to the Nintendo DS version only. All of the basic physical moves are implemented, the targeting system remains intact (sorry RE4 fans), however several changes initially made in the GameCube remake make their way onto the dual-screen. Your character can perform a quick 180-turn by pressing down and B. Also similar to one of the GameCube’s enhanced control schemes, Deadly Silence will allow your character to reload their weapon by holding R and pressing the B button. A la Resident Evil 4, the combat knife is selectable using the L button.

The other mode included in Deadly Silence, is the more tweaked Rebirth Mode. This arranged mode features the first-person knife fights already seen in several screenshots, and includes stylus-based puzzles not found in the original game.

The much-wondered wireless multiplayer mode will allow four players to play cooperative and battle modes. Possibly similar to the current PS2 Resident Evil titles, the cooperative mode will require the players to escape from the mansion. The battle mode is a race to kill the most monsters, with scores based on enemy size and difficulty. In addition, colored icons are used to indicate the other characters in wireless mode.

With so much promise and a loyal fan-base already around it, Resident Evil: Deadly Silence is already looking like a true celebration of the series’ tenth anniversary. Look for it to release early in the U.S. next year, around the Japanese release.
