The Witness is an open-world, exploration-puzzle game, offering mystery and intrigue that is answered only by exploration and solving two-dimensional puzzles. Sometimes the answer to a puzzle can be found in the puzzle itself, and sometimes you need to explore your environment.
Note: While we encourage everyone to at least try and complete The Witness without the use of guides, we understand that sometimes frustration can set in. Before spoiling it for yourself, take a break and return at a later time. If it still doesn't click, feel free to use the guide below.
The Symmetry Walkthrough (Line symmetry and mirroring)
The Symmetry (Trophy name) puzzle is somewhat near the "beginning" of the game, and actually spans two different locations. Both areas play off the idea of symmetry, however. The core mechanic here is mirroring.
The first area you must solve is a doc area. From there, follow the lines around to the second portion, located on a giant rock. During this area use the environment around you, paying particular close attention to the rock formations in the water. For the third part and final part, you'll need to mirror the pattern on the right panels (yellow) to the panels on the left (blue).
Hints: (if you don't want to complete spoil it):
- Drawing down the lines on paper might help remembering or visualizing the symmetry.
- Mirroring is important!
- Pay particularly close attention to your environment. The rock formations in the water are your guide.
- For the final part, you can back up enough to see both the left and right panels at once.
