Top 10 Most Anticipated Movies of 2017

It’s pretty safe to say the movie industry has been really delivering over the last year. All things considered, there’s a definite buzz in the air about the future of the franchises we’ve come to love or have been in love with for ages. Risks have been taken and projects have either fallen or flown. The public, however, seems to always come back with their movie-going dollar and excitement in their hearts. Without a doubt, no matter what you’re a fan of or what you might be discovering for the first time, 2017 looks like it’s shaping up to be one of the best years in film of the decade.

Here are the ten most anticipated movies coming our way in 2017 (in order of release):

Logan (March 3rd)

The third and final chapter in the ‘Wolverine’ trilogy also marks the very last appearance of Hugh Jackman as the titular anti-hero. Retiring altogether from the role, Patrick Stewart joins Jackman as he also takes his final bow from his role as Professor X. The movie plans to introduce X-23, Logan’s daughter/clone, as we join them in their violent, rated R final adventure of the franchise.

Kong: Skull Island (March 10th)

‘Kong: Skull Island’ will introduce the newest incarnation of the classic movie monster, depicting him in his largest and deadliest form to date. The movie will set-up a world in which an epic battle will take place between Kong and the most recent version of Godzilla from the 2014 reboot. The pair will finally square off in the remake of 1962’s King Kong vs Godzilla, entitled ‘Kong vs. Godzilla’, slated for release in 2020.

Power Rangers (March 24th)

With the nostalgia market almost hitting a fever pitch, it was only a matter of time before the reboot of arguably the greatest live-action children’s series of the 90’s, ‘Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers’, made its way to Hollywood. These new heroes will face much darker threats and deadlier enemies in the modernized realization of the show. The movie will star comedian Bill Hader as the lovable android, Alpha-5, Elizabeth Banks as the evil witch, Rita Repulsa, and none other than ‘Breaking Bad’s Bryan Cranston as Zordon.

Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2 (May 5th)

Virtually an overnight success in 2014, the sequel to ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ looks to capture the same magic and wonder of its predecessor. The rambunctious “heroes” return to face a new threat, Ego the Living Planet, a sentient planetoid being…and Star-Lord’s real father! The original cast returns for the sequel, alongside Kurt Russell making his Marvel Studios debut as Ego himself.

Alien: Covenant (May 19th)

The first official sequel to 'Prometheus', ‘Covenant’ will act as a significant link between the original movies and its somewhat cryptic prequel, ‘Prometheus’. Michael Fassbender returns as the android, David, as well as his replica, Walter, in the second installment to the series of 'Alien' prequels.

Wonder Woman (June 2nd)

The first ever big screen adaptation of the greatest female superhero of all time, Wonder Woman, finally comes home as a part of the DC Expanded Universe. Starring ‘Batman v Superman’s Gal Gadot as the titular heroine, the movie takes place during WWI, where she makes her way off her secluded paradise and joins the world as a warrior for peace.

Spider-Man: Homecoming (July 7th)

Earlier this year, ‘Captain America: Civil War’ gave one particular hero the perfect jumping off point for his series of films. ‘Homecoming’ will be the first solo film for the Marvel Studios version of Spider-Man. Starring Tom Holland opposite Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man, they’ll be joined by Michael Keaton in his return to the world of comic book movies as Adrian Toomes, aka The Vulture.

Thor: Ragnarok (November 3rd)

Not much is known about the final chapter to the ‘Thor’ trilogy. From what has been revealed so far, we know Thor will be teaming up with Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner/Hulk in Asgard, which explains the pair’s absence from ‘Civil War’. The movie will also mark the return of fan favorite villain, Loki, as well as Benedict Cumberbatch returning as Doctor Strange, expanding on the post-credit scene from his movie earlier this year.

Justice League (November 17th)

With the stage set for a new ensemble superhero epic, ‘Justice League’ will be the first of its kind film for the planned DC Extended Universe. Attempting to “assemble the seven”, Ben Affleck’s Batman prepares for the impending threat to the planet by gathering together extraordinary heroes for a battle of the ages.

Star Wars: Episode VIII (December 15th)

The next chapter in the episodic “Skywalker Saga”, ‘Episode VIII’ hopefully plans to answer many of the questions left by ‘The Force Awakens’, most importantly, the origins of Rey, the identity of Supreme Leader Snoke, and the ultimate fate of Kylo Ren. With a new ‘Star Wars’ movie planned every year for the foreseeable future, there looks to be a promising story to unfold for fans of all ages. With an entire expanded universe planned for these movies, it looks like the series has a new life and whole new world of possibilities to play with.
