Yesterday we presented you with the Top 10 Movies to Get You in the American Spirit” . Today GameZone takes a look at the Top 5 Games You Should Play on the 4th of July. Whether it’s to replicate fireworks, defend America, or be a bad dude, these games will capture the essence of the 4th of July. Take a break from the summer heat but stay in that state of mind as you play through some of these 4th of July favorites.
5. Boom Boom Rocket – Xbox 360
Fireworks are the highlight of the 4th of July. Thanks to Mother Nature, it’s not always certain we’ll get the chance to see them. Weather is unpredictable, but I’ll tell you what isn’t unpredictable: that you can boot up your Xbox 360, play Boom Boom Rocket, and see a spectacular fireworks show from the comfort of your own couch. Thanks to this Xbox Live Arcade game, you no longer have to wait in long lines of traffic after the show, battle rain, or miss out because of droughts. In Boom Boom Rocket, your goal is to trigger firework explosions in time with music. My only complaint is that there isn’t any 4th of July music to play the game to. That doesn’t mean you can’t lower the volume and pump Bruce Springsteen’s “Born in the USA” in the background!
4. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 – Xbox 360/PS3
Independence Day is about celebrating America’s liberty while paying tribute to our soldiers who so bravely sacrifice their lives for our freedom. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 doesn’t necessarily focus on only the United States, but also on the collaborative effort of multiple nations to combat terrorism, which we all can relate to. I think seeing the Russian invasion on America is a memorable experience. Seeing common suburbs invaded and iconic U.S. landmarks in ruins leaves a lasting impression. The Washington D.C. level in particular, which has you running through the ravaged corridors of the White House, will have you on the edge of your seat.
3. Independence Day – Playstation
Hello, boys! I’m baaaaaack! Just like our previous list, Independence Day makes its way onto another top 4th of July list. This time, you don’t just get to watch the greatest 4th of July movie ever—you also get to play it. Independence Day is a 3D flying, shooting game comprised of 13 missions. Granted, the missions are repetitive, and you don’t actually hear Bill Pullman’s famous speech, but that doesn’t take away from the fact that you are saving mankind on the actual 4th of July. You can’t get much more American than that.
2. Homefront – Xbox 360/PS3
Homefront is about as close as we have to a modern Revolutionary War-type game. You play as members of a resistance movement defending the United States from Korean military occupation. The story was written by John Milius, who wrote/directed Red Dawn (also on our Top 10 Movies to Get You in the American Spirit), so it’s no surprise that this game made the list. If you want to know what it’s like to defend your country’s soil from invading armies, this is the game to play. As the tagline states, “Home is where the war is,” and it’s frightening to see images of war in our own backyards. Needless to say, this game is the modern Revolutionary War.
1. Bad Dudes – Nintendo
Bad Dudes vs. DragonNinja, or referred to as simply Bad Dudes, takes the number one spot on our list of games to play on the 4th of July. In this classic, you are tasked with rescuing the President of the United States after he is kidnapped by the infamous DragonNinja. You not only prove that you are a bad enough dude to rescue President Ronnie (based on former U.S. President Ronald Reagan), but if you succeed, you get to celebrate by eating burgers with him! Now how many Americans can sit here and say they’ve enjoyed a burger with the President of the United States?
We hope you enjoyed the list. Hopefully with some of your spare time you are able to enjoy a few of these titles. They really do capture the American spirit. As always, have a safe and fun 4th of July, everyone!
