Ubisoft’s Yannis Mallat Talks Wii Plans

After sharing the stage with Epic President Mike Capps and Insomniac Games’ engine director Mike Acton and showing clips of Bambi to an Evanescence soundtrack at DICE, Ubisoft Montreal CEO Yannis Mallat spared a few moments for a cookie and an interview with Wired.com where, among other things, he discussed plans and “big adventure games” on the Wii.

When questioned as to Ubisoft Montreal’s lack of participation in Wii development versus that seen on the 360 and PS3, Mallat said that they’ve been making them from the beginning, along with casual games from a new division for the DS, with games such as My Word Coach. He also hints that they are making more Wii titles, but those cannot be revealed just yet.

When questioned about the potential for third parties on the Wii with games that aren’t like My Word Coach or Rayman Raving Rabbids, but more akin to larger adventures and bigger productions, Mallat said “Hm. That’s a very interesting question. I think, again, as soon as there is consensus that talks to gamers or casual gamers on this console, and as soon there is a consumer benefit that is to be seen on such an innovative console, then yes, there will be a market. Red Steel, if I remember well, sold 1.2 million units. That’s what we could call an action-adventure game, in a sense. Zelda did well, too, of course. Yes. There is definitely a market. That console specifically has to be thought of in the same way that it’s been produced and designed, when it comes time to make games. And when you hit the right balance, success will just follow.”
