The shipment of Hawkmoons Xur brought last weekend has proven aptly timed: Iron Banner and Trials of Osiris are just weeks away, and with rafts of changes in tow. It’s only fitting that the best PvP primary in the game become widespread in the weeks before. This weekend, though, Xur is all about armor. But not all of it is worth your time.
Immolation Fists: As if the Sunbreaker subclass needed more AoE damage. The Immolation Fists are baseline exotics: they provide good stats and a free skill. In their case, that skill is Explosive Pyre, which sees victims of the Hammer of Sol super explode into fiery bits, chaining fire damage to nearby enemies. In essence, it gives the super a serious AoE punch, especially against dense groups of enemies. For PvE, the Fists aren’t a bad choice if you want to free up that skill slot. But for PvP, they’re the definition of win-more. The added explosion from Explosive Pyre will rarely come into play, even in game types like control.
Celestial Nighthawk: We’ve seen Celestial Nighthawk in Xur’s inventory several times now, and it’s always pulled its weight by giving Hunters a way to help with PvE scenarios. Of course, with the advent of the Nightstalker subclass, Hunters have become top-tier PvE support players. But while the Nighthawk has lost some luster, it still has its uses. In particular, it’s invaluable in the King’s Fall raid. A Nighthawk super can deal with problem elites and help stagger bosses, which is especially useful against the final boss, Oryx. Any Hunters with a passing interest in raiding will want to pick this one up. That this weekend’s iteration of the helmet has a split roll of intellect and strength is the cherry on top.
Heart of the Praxic Fire: Everyone knows what Radiance does: it lets Sunsingers throw a million grenades. What does Heart of the Praxic Fire do? Let them throw a million and one grenades, and move extremely fast while doing it. For an item vying for the ever-precious exotic slot, that’s a cripplingly linear effect. It doesn’t affect your play style meaningfully, and the effect it does have is negligible. In both PvE and PvP, the Praxic Fire is an easy pass. It is damn stylish, though.
