If Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma has his way, one of the next trips to Hyrule might not be such a solitary experience.
Aonuma told GameInformer’s Phil Kollar last week, “Having people play together is a theme that’s always stuck in my mind, but it’s about trying to create what would work best for Legend of Zelda.”
He adds that although they haven’t found the best way to do that yet, he hopes to be able to come up with an idea that will “move us in that direction at some point.”
Aonuma also told GameInformer that this may not come in the form of traditional multiplayer.
“Let’s say a player does something in their game that affects an area, and then that is communicated back to another system, and that would introduce new elements to your game. I find that sort of communication really interesting.”
On the topic of DLC for Zelda, Aonuma tells Kollar simply, “we have thought about DLC, and we are thinking about it.” That should be enough to make any Zelda fan drool at the possibilities. Kollar suggests downloadable dungeons or even a Master Quest as potential options.
Aonuma’s suggestion for a connected Zelda won’t be coming with Skyward Sword, but the idea he presents sounds a bit like what From Software’s Demon’s Souls has done, though Aonuma’s version won’t be a simple rehash of that system, to be sure.
While you may not find yourself roaming the countryside with seven alternately-colored Links, the future Hyrule may be a much more vibrant place than ever before.
