PS4 Nyko Intercooler Review: Smooth airflow

Nyko’s Intercooler technology has been around for quite a while now, dating back to the Xbox 360 which actually ran into a bit of a snag at first. That’s in the past, though, and now Nyko is back, this time with a PlayStation 4 version.

Now, as far as I can tell, I don’t think overheating is as prevalent on the PS4 as it might have been with past systems. Of course, there’s always the chance, especially in warmer climates, that it could be a problem. The Nyko Intercooler for PS4 looks to eliminate that through a simple clip-on cooling device that directs warm air away from your console.

I’m not scientist. I don’t know the first thing about the nuts and bolts of how the Intercooler actually operates. What I can say, though, is that it’s extremely easy to attach to your PS4. The peripheral fits snugly into the PS4 and plugs into where the power cord usually goes (with a spot in the back for the power cord). Using the patented Power Pass-Through technology, the Intercooler automatically turns on with your console; no extra cables needed. The entire process of setting it up takes less than a minute.

Aside from some added noise from the fans, which is easily be drowned out after a few minutes of gameplay, you won’t even notice the Intercooler doing its thing. And perhaps the best part is the finish of the peripheral is designed to match up with the PS4 exactly, so it blends right in. The only problem you might run into is if you own one of the newer white PS4s because then you’ll get a two tone look, which can also be kind of cool if that’s what you’re into.

I guess the biggest question is, does the Intercooler actually do anything? I don’t keep my PS4 locked away in a closed case, but it is kind of tucked back in a TV console. I make sure there’s room for the console to breathe in the back, but it can still get hot, especially with me living in South Florida. The fans definitely do their job as I, on multiple occasions, felt the heat being pushed away from the PS4.

Does it actually make a difference, though? As I’ve said, overheating has never been a problem for my PS4. Again, not everyone’s setup is the same of mine. If you notice your PS4 getting dangerously hot, the Nyko Intercooler might be worth checking out. And for just $24.99, it’s not going to break the bank.

I’ve reached out to Nyko for specific numbers regarding temperature cooling and how, or if, attaching the Nyko Intercooler will increase the PS4s power consumption in any way. I will update accordingly when I hear back.
