Review: Corsair M65 RGB Gaming Mouse

Corsair’s M65 RGB Gaming Mouse — part of Corsair’s new line of high-performance gaming peripherals — is, in some ways, an improved version of the Vengeance M65 from last year. Fans will find many similarities between the two, though the M65 RGB continues with Corsair Gaming’s focus on RGB color customization.

In line with the Corsair K70 RGB keyboard, the M65 RGB Gaming Mouse features 16.8 million color backlighting. Using the Corsair Utility Engine, which I didn’t find to be too user friendly, you are able to adjust the lighting how you see fit. Available in white or black, and coupled with one of the also color RGB gaming keyboards, you can create some pretty stylish themes. While the color of the logo is clearly visible atop the mouse (with an underside glow), the light beneath the scroll wheel is often hard to see.

Color aside, the M65 RGB mouse comes with an aluminum body and a soft-touch rubberized plastic upper-half. It gives the mouse a sturdy, heavier feel. For those who prefer a lighter weight to their gaming mouse, the mouse comes with three individual, easily removable weights.

But while the mouse itself can have a nice weight to it, I found the overall feel to be a little jarring in my hand. My current mouse is the Azio v7 A4TECH USB Wired ULTRACORE3 Bloody Gaming Mouse. It’s nothing to write home about, but it is very comfortable thanks to a side part that lets me rest my ring finger on it. The M65 RGB has no such thing, so it was a bit of an adjustment period for me.

The left click and right click buttons are also made of a glossy plastic that, while providing a sleek look, does get a bit sweaty and when in use for a while. On the left part of a mouse is a the “Sniper” button that can basically be set to perform any action you want (provided you can understand the Corsair Utility Engine). Again, the slight bump from the small red button is a little uncomfortable at first, but it’s functionality is well worth the time it may take to become accustomed to.

Overall, the M65 RGB Gaming Mouse is a nice complement to Corsair’s other gaming peripherals of the same line. Hooking up the mouse is just a matter of plugging it in, but the biggest challenge is getting accustomed to the Corsair Utility Engine. Once you do that, the mouse becomes yours — opening up an array of options from the sensitivity, to the functionality shortcuts, to the overall color scheme.
