Review: The Boys Season 2 Premiere

Lets just say that if you loved the first season of The Boys, you can set your worries aside for season 2, because somehow they were able to top season 1 by a long shot. Even writing that feels weird, since season 1 holds a near and dear place in so many people’s hearts.

It was a new and innovative show based on a comic book that really brought more to the table than all the other run of the mill action shows. You should be ecstatic to hear that this season holds those same elements while introducing even more to the table.

WARNING SEASON 1 SPOILERS AHEAD:

The Boys takes no time to jump right back into the violence and gore that we all know and love. Everything looks just as satisfyingly disgusting, and the kills are more creative than ever. Even more original methods of destruction, mayhem, and murder are used in this season which is always really very refreshing to see. From decapitations to electricity the kills are always unique. Too many action shows and movie sequels can lose creativity and seem like they are just copying and pasting the same action scene in a different setting. In no way is this what you see in the new season of The Boys, and in fact is quite the opposite.

On top of the varying action we see, we also get to see many entertaining locations such as scenes taking place on the water and other scenes that take place around the city. The effects are great as well, making all those violent scenes look real and convincing, which is very important if you are trying to pull off the action on screen in The Boys Season 2.

The characters are wonderfully developed in even just the first three episodes that were released. We get to see the aftermath of Billy and what he plans on doing after finding out that his wife is definitely alive, we watch as The Deep continues on his journey to find himself and understand what his purpose is, and we even get to see very good development on the character Stan Edgar who is the CEO of Vought.

The Boys

Since Stillwell died at the hands of Homelander at the end of the first season, you can expect to see Edgar play a pivotal role in attempting to connect with the supes in the same way that Stillwell was able to. Kimiko plays a major role in the first few episodes and we get to see Hughie be the same awkward nerd we know him to be while also seeing him with more confidence. All the characters truly do have very deepening development that fits their characters perfectly.

Like the previous season the acting is on point, and you can expect to see stellar performances from Karl Urban, Antony Starr, and truly everyone in the cast. Karl Urban is still just as commanding in his scenes playing Butcher, and Antony Starr is just as terrifying in his scenes playing Homelander.

The whole cast really hit it out of the ballpark this season, which is really important on a superhero show that really relies on dramatic elements and not only senseless action that furthers nothing in the plot. All the performances are very believable and I never found myself being taken out of the element by bad acting or really by anything I saw on screen.

THE VERDICT:

The Boys Season 2 premiere really outdid itself and it looks like the season is headed in the right direction. From the violence, to the character development, along with the spectacular performances by the actors, this season is really able to shine over the already very strong season 1. Any fans of The Boys will be glad to hear that season 2 if a definite must watch that is being more creative in all the right ways.
