Sonic & Knuckles to Have Lock-On Tech for Virtual Console
kombo -
Sega has recently announced that Sonic & Knuckles will be released on Virtual Console in Japan and that this version will include the original's lock-on technology. No word on a US release or the full extent of this feature.
The original 1994 Sonic & Knuckles Sega Genesis cartridge had its own cartridge slot on the top. When connected to other Genesis games it offered extra content for those games, specifically Sonic 2 and Sonic 3.
For Sonic 2 the lock-on let players go through the game as Knuckles. Because Sonic & Knuckles is basically the second half of Sonic 3, connecting that game with it unlocks the completed game called Sonic 3 & Knuckles. This added Sonic 3's save function to the Sonic & Knuckles levels and revealed seven additional "super" chaos emeralds to collect in addition to the original seven.
When connected to the original Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic & Knuckles unlocked a secret line of special stages disguised behind a fake error message called "Blue Sphere". The lock-on generated and unlocked unique stages for almost every Genesis game connected to it, totaling over 100 million possible levels.
When Sonic & Knuckles was released on Xbox Live Arcade in September, it incorporated the lock-on technology if players owned the XBLA versions of the previous Sonic games. Sega has now confirmed that the Virtual Console version will have the same functionality.
Sonic & Knuckles will be released on virtual console in Japan on October 27th for 600 Wii points. The ESRB previously confirmed that the game would come to North American virtual console at some point in the future.
