Ensemble Learns You Don’t Take Away a Halo Fan’s Grenades
kombo -
During the four-year process of developing Halo Wars, the doomed Ensemble Studios have managed to learn a thing or two about the fans of the hit franchise. One of those things is that you don't keep a Halo fan from his grenades:Our first focus group was actually Halo fans. I remember that. It was interesting, because one of the first things we learned was how much hardcore Halo fans like throwing grenades.
(laughter)
It seemed like a really funny thing to get out of the control test, but they all would come up and say, "This trigger needs to throw grenades!" Over and over and over again, that was direct feedback -- "We need to be able to throw grenades!" So, you can throw grenades now. -- Graeme Devine, Lead Designer, to Gamasutra via GameSetWatchUltimately, one of Ensemble's goals was to introduce Halo fans to the RTS genre. We'll see how well they accomplish this early next year.
Criterion Ups the Ante with Paid DLC for Burnout Paradise
kombo -
Well, we all knew the ride wouldn't last forever, much as we had hoped it would.
After so much awesome free downloadable content for Burnout Paradise, it seems that Criterion-- at least for one update, anyway-- has realized there's money to be made in Paradise City. We'd mentioned in a previous podcast that this would be free content, but we can now confirm that it will be premium paid-for content.
Here's why. We never expected to create anything this ambitious for the island, but as it progressed we got more and more excited about what it could become. (In fact, that's the story of all our Downloadable Content.)
Big Surf is the culmination of everything we learned creating Paradise City, and we want it to bring you a truly spectacular new experience – the highlight of a year of incredible premium content. Burnout already delivers incredible value for money – literally hundreds of hours of gameplay with your original disk or PSN purchase, plus more with the free Cagney Pack and free Burnout Paradise Bikes.
We want Burnout Paradise players to experience the greatest support ever seen in a console game. We're transforming not just Burnout Paradise, but the whole Burnout franchise through DLC, and we appreciate the support we know you guys will give us for our paid content. We think it's worth it. -- Criterion GamesWell, they've done well by us so far, and I think we can trust them on this. But the question remains: How much?

Rumor: Jackal ReBirth?
kombo -
Konami has been on something of a WiiWare roll as of late with their ReBirth series, offering up new, bite-sized chunks of their glorious gaming past with graphics and sound clearly meant to evoke the earlier heyday of franchises such as Gradius, Contra, and most recently, Castlevania. And naturally, one would expect they will only be looking to add more to the mix.

Family of “Hold Your Wee for a Wii” Victim Awarded $16m
kombo -
Remember back to January of 2007, when the Wii had just come out, and was the hottest thing on the market; no one could get one.
Unfortunately for one Jennifer Strange, a couple of Sacramento radio hosts for the program "Morning Wave" had gained possession of one of the coveted consoles, and decided to hold a contest for listeners to claim the prize. The contest, dubbed "Hold Your Wee for a Wii," had contestants see how much water they could drink before using the toilet.
Strange attempted to win the effort for her three children, but lost her life due to water intoxication in the process. And though no charges were filed against the radio station, the case still went to court and was settled this week.

My Games This Weekend – 11.20.09 – New Super Mario Bros. Wii and WWE
kombo -
This weekend, it's more New Super Mario Bros. Wii. The wife and I have already stepped into the dark land of World 8, and will soon make Bowser eat his own shell. So far, the game really hasn't been all that difficult, even with two of us getting in the way of one-another. Nonetheless, it's been quite a fun ride, and I can't wait to go back and start exploring for secrets, Star Coins, and such.
I'm also aiming to get WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2010 for the Wii underway, so keep an eye out for that review soon. In the meantime, I've got the DS version in progress, so hopefully that will show up sometime early next week.
In addition, WWE Survivor Series is this Sunday, and I'll likely have Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story, aka "the best game in the series" with me. Funny that in one game, I have to ensure Bowser's survival, while in the other, he's soon going to wish he was never born. Such is life.
So, those are my games this weekend, what are yours?

Silent Hill Shattered Memories Delayed to 2010
kombo -
Konami has told ComputerAndVideogames that Silent Hill Shattered Memories will launch in February of 2010. This is the only direct comment anyone has received from Konami on the game's release date amid much confusion from retailers.
"It's out in Feb, but has never been officially confirmed as anything else," Konami representative said, pointing out how they never actually gave retailers any of the dates they listed. "A few retail sites put a loose November date on it, but we never officially gave it a date until recently."

Week-Ending Game Endings – 10.16.09 – 100 NES Game Overs in 10 Minutes
kombo -
Here's something a little different for our Week-Ending Game Endings this week, thanks to Kombo reader and video contributor Ross Miller of OriginalNintendo.net.
Normally, we look at the endings that you get when you beat the game, but in this video, Miller takes us through 100 NES endings you get when you don't beat the game.
There are 100 here, and they're all unlabeled. Some are obvious, like Metroid at the start. Even so, how many can you recognize and identify?
Have a great weekend!

Lazlow Comments on Upcoming Grand Theft Auto IV DLC
kombo -
Grand Theft Auto's infamous DJ Lazlow was recently on the "Opie and Anthony Show" and he let some details drop on the upcoming Grand Theft Auto IV DLC. His exact words "More missions and a bunch of other content." He also goes onto state there will not be another Grand Theft Auto game for several years.
That's it? I hope when he says "bunch of other content" he means more landmass and more landmass translates to Los Santos. I need to get my Grove Street on.

No Doubt About It: Gwen Stefani and Company Suing Activision for Band Hero Likenesses
kombo -
It looks like Activision might start screening their phone calls, as No Doubt is now suing Activision and seeking damages for their portrayal in Band Hero.
Much like the Cobain controversy Courtney Love slurred at Guitar Hero 5, the group says they gave consent for their avatars to perform three of their own songs, but instead wind up performing more than 60 throughout the course of the game, all without their knowledge or approval. They say that underneath it all, it makes them look like "virtual karaoke players."
Boomshakalaka! NBA Jam Remake Confirmed
kombo -
Electronic Arts confirmed today murmurs of a remake of NBA Jam – and yes it is in fact coming to the Wii.
Computer And Video Games reports that the release mostly affirmed EA Canada's intention to take everything fans loved about the old arcade classic and bring it into the modern era.
"Featuring the sights and sounds that fans of the franchise will instantly recognize, EA Sports NBA Jam mixes the old school with the new," the release said. By "sights and sounds," many fans probably hope the release refers to quotes from the original game's famous commentary like "BOOMSHAKALAKA." The release apparently says nothing specific about whether or not it will retain the original game's four-on-four play style or super-deformed character models.
The original reports of a new NBA Jam came from ESPN but were unconfirmed until this EA announcement. The second major indication came when EA Tiburon hired the original creator of NBA Jam.

Rumor: More Mega Man 10 Info
kombo -
Everyone was taken off-guard yesterday when Mega Man 10 was revealed in a preview for the newest issue of Nintendo Power. But it looks like there might be more information out there than what Nintendo Power was able to provide.
Prior to the reveal of Mega Man 9 last year, there were certain rumors buzzing around, most of which were more or less true. As it turns out, there may have been a similar leak of information just prior to Nintendo Power's revelation.

2008 NL Cy Young Winner to Be Face of MLB 2K9
kombo -
Despite the San Francisco Giants finishing 18 games below .500 last season, their stud pitcher Tim Lincecum had himself a year: He went 18-5, led Major League Baseball with 265 strikeouts and held opposing batters to an NL-low .221 batting average.
And after winning the 2008 Cy Young award today, Lincecum can add another title to his resume: video game cover boy.
The young San Francisco Giants right-hander did indeed get the prestigious honor as the NL's premier pitcher in the 2008 season, but he also was announced as the cover athlete for the upcoming Major League Baseball 2K9 video game from 2K Sports.
As a video game fanatic, Lincecum said he couldn't be happier.
...
"Whenever I'm hanging out at home or traveling on the road, you can find me playing video games, and I'm definitely the best gamer in the clubhouse by far. I'm incredibly stoked that 2K Sports picked me to represent Major League Baseball 2K9, and I look forward to lending my baseball knowledge to the development process." -- MLB News Release
I'll leave my obligatory plug for a Chicago Cubs player to be the face of MLB 2K9 out of this and say hey, you know what would have been cool? If AL Rookie of the Year Evan Longoria of the Tampa Bay Rays made the cover. Lincecum's a nice pick, but the Rays were the story of the year, in my opinion.
